First, allow me to say this. I have personally witnessed flat-earthers giving an explanation for every point they believe is a lie from their opposers, and what they cannot accept or explain they claim is fake. My question is, why would anyone want to lie about the earth being in the shape of a sphere or as most know it, a globe?
In today’s world of googling information, there are numerous evidentiary facts that are easily found proving a spherical shape of the earth (if in fact it must be proven).
The Lunar eclipse, for example, reveals a circular shadow on the moon when the earth comes between it and the sun. The irrefutable fact is a flat earth would produce a linear shadow, and since flat-earthers insist a globe shape cannot be possible because the waters of the earth would not stay in place, neither for the same reason, would a coin-shaped flat earth for it would have to be in a vertical position to produce a circular shadow. Their denial of gravity is beyond bizarre as well—apparently they do not realize they experience gravity on a daily basis.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” Psalms 19:1
For a point of reference, I am putting forward one declaration of a fellow Christian’s argument who has unfortunately fallen into the snare of the flat-earth belief. A sad fact about flat-earthers—their behavior is nothing short of cult-like.
They are adept in the use of dogmatic circular reasoning in defense of their belief because they cannot produce scientific evidence for it. Disproving this fellow Christian’s argument will create a domino effect thus disproving subsequent declarations. The claim is, God says in His word that He set two great lights (the sun and moon) in the firmament (true, Genesis 1:16, 17) which is too close for the size of the sun to fit within (not true; explained later), and that this does not fit the idea of the earth being a “globe.” Though “globe” is not specifically used, there are implications of it, for instance,
Proverbs 8:27—compass. “Compass” (Hebrew khug) is the same word as “circle” in Isaiah 40:22, as well as “compassed” in Job 26:10. All three clearly refer to the roundness of the earth, especially to the spherical nature of sea level, defining, as it were, the global shape of the earth.
This particular flat-earther believes “the four corners” found in several verses including Revelation 7:1 is proof of not just a flat earth, but also of a squared flat earth. Unfortunately, this person is failing to study the full context and meaning of “the four corners”.
Revelation 7:1—four corners. The word for “corners” (Greek zonia) is translated “quarters” in Revelation 20:8, referring to the four directions (the “four winds,” one from each quarter, or quadrant, of the earth, a.k.a. north, south, east, & west as measured from the point of view of an observer on the surface of the earth), not to a flat, square, earth, as some critics allege.

If he can claim “the four corners” as proof of a flat earth then he should give the same allowance for “circle” and “compass” to represent a round or globe shaped earth. The error in this reasoning comes from the claim that NASA manipulates photos and falsifies documentation. Flat-earthers refuse to accept NASA’s calculations i.e. the sun is 93 million miles away and 109 times bigger than the earth. Therefore, the sun could not fit in the firmament and we would get no heat if the sun were in outer space. Again, what would be the purpose for NASA, or anyone for that matter, to lie about a round earth? What of other countries who have been to space and taken photos of the earth that show the globe shape? Are they faking them as well?
What is more sad than believing the flat-earth theory is not having the faith as a Christian that our Creator, Almighty God has power over the entire universe in His control, including the heat we receive from the sun at whatever distance He chose to set it.
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in the earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” Colossians 1:16.
I see nothing but consistency in God’s word and His handywork. Since there is no argument concerning other planets (that I know of), ask yourself why God would create the planets in the entire universe round except the earth?
WHAT IS THE FIRMAMENT?
God called the firmament Heaven (Genesis 1:8). Firmament is defined as “expanse.” So to rephrase, God called the expanse Heaven. Many Christians have always understood “firmament” to be a separate space all to itself as if under a dome. But it is not. It is the whole expanse of the universe—from our visible sky to eternity. The height of heaven is figuratively referred to in a plural tense i.e. heavens; the highest being, as the apostle Paul phrases it, “the third heaven.” (2 Corinthians 12:2). One expanse, three heights (or depths). A good analogy would be a swimming pool. There are three depths; shallow, middle, and deep in one pool. The shallow end would be our atmosphere, the middle would be where God set the sun, moon and stars, and the deep end would be where God sits on his throne.
Genesis 1:7 tells us, “the firmament divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament.” The firmament dividing the waters is the expanse of space separating the waters on the earth from the waters at the highest level of heaven, Revelation 22:1. The higher waters were above the expanse not at the highest point under it (our immediate atmosphere). That means the waters under the firmament include the rain clouds as well as the bodies of water on the earth. Genesis 1:20 makes it abundantly clear that the firmament of heaven incorporates our atmosphere—birds could not fly above it.
God not only set the sun in the expanse of heaven, he set it at the perfect distance to sustain life on the earth and that makes NASA’s calculations of the size and distance of the sun not just plausible but true. But alas, the human nature in us tends to be stubborn so regardless of scriptural evidence shown, some want to stand firm on restricting the firmament to the immediate visible sky. I wonder if they have read the following references in their proper context. Now knowing that firmament, expanse, and heavens are synonymous with one universal space, these references should have new meaning thereby gaining them a better and truer understanding. Note: “host” refers to the sun, moon and stars. Genesis 2:1; Deuteronomy 4:19; 2 Kings 17:16; 21:3, 5; 23:5; Isaiah 45:12; Jeremiah 19:13; Zephaniah 1:5; Acts 7:42.
The Circle Of The Earth – BY HENRY M. MORRIS, PH.D. – JUNE 30, 1992
“It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22).
The discovery that the world is round is considered one of man’s greatest scientific achievements, often wrongly attributed to Christopher Columbus. Columbus was, indeed, a great and courageous thinker and explorer, as well as a Bible-believing Christian, but many scholars had long before so concluded, and many people had already migrated to the New World.
As far as the sphericity of the earth is concerned, the “flat-earth” myth of the Middle Ages was not the belief of many scholars of antiquity. The Bible, in particular, never hints of a drop-off point at the earth’s edge, or any such notion as that. Its few references to “the four corners” of the earth (e.g., Isaiah 11:12) literally mean “the four quarters of the earth”-that is, the four quadrants of the compass.
In our text for the day, the word for “circle” is translated “compass” in Proverbs 8:27: “(God) set a compass upon the face of the depth” (same as ‘deep,’ referring to the ocean). Other occurrences are in Job 26:10: “He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end,” and Job 22:14: “(God) walketh in the circuit of heaven.” All of these passages are best understood in terms of a spherical earth, with its basic shape at sea level determined by its ocean surface as controlled by gravity. The Hebrew word itself (khug) basically means a circle. Any vertical cross section through the earth’s center is a “great circle,” of course, with any “straight” line on the ocean surface actually representing an arc of such a circle. (Mr. Morris’ article can be found on the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) website).
I could go on, but invalidating (with scripture) the points regarding the two great lights in the firmament and the lack of (literal) reference to a globe shaped earth in the Bible is sufficient enough. As a Christian, it should not be difficult to believe that scientific evidence supports God’s word—creation over evolution; God’s design over man’s theory. It is difficult to watch fellow Christians get drawn into the folly of this theory.
Proverbs 9:6 “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.”
