Should Christians Pay to See Movie Zero AD? – No!

Many people are unaware that the Harmon brothers, including Neal Harmon, founded Utah-based Angel Studios. The studio has previously distributed and promoted The Chosen and other projects associated with the Mormon/LDS Cult. Although not everyone involved in Zero A.D. is Mormon/LDS, the company was founded and is led by people who follow Mormon/LDS teachings.

Historic Mormon/LDS doctrine, as taught in their standard works and by their leaders, presents a different view of God and of Jesus. Comparing their doctrine to what the Bible teaches:

• That God the Father was once a man who progressed to godhood and that humans can likewise progress toward godhood. However, the true scriptures declare, “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me” (Isaiah 45:5; see also Isaiah 43:10–11; 44:6, 8).

• Jesus is taught as the literal spirit son of Heavenly Father and a heavenly mother, and as the spirit brother of Lucifer. But the Bible presents the unique, eternal Sonship of Christ: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1); “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9); and “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30).

• The classical Christian doctrine of the Trinity (one God in three persons) is rejected in favor of a plurality of gods. Scripture affirms, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4).

• Additional (false scriptures): The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price are accepted as authoritative alongside the Bible—contrary to the sufficiency of the apostolic gospel (Galatians 1:8–9; 2 Timothy 3:16–17).

These differences constitute “another Jesus” and “another gospel” in the sense of the passages cited above. Mormon/LDS teaching requires faith plus ordinances, temple work, and progressive works for full salvation and exaltation, rather than the biblical gospel of justification by faith alone in Christ alone (Romans 3:28; 4:5; Ephesians 2:8–9; Galatians 2:16).

Application to Supporting the Film

Galatians 1 and 2 John do not require believers to isolate themselves from every commercial enterprise, but they warn against supporting or endorsing (“bidding God speed”) those who promote or identify with a different gospel and a different Christ. Direct financial support through ticket purchases, promotions, or related merchandise sends resources and cultural endorsement to the producing and distributing company.

Monteverde, the director, is Catholic, which is also problematic, and the film frames itself around a Matthew narrative, with typical cinematic expansions beyond the scriptures. Many believers who have examined The Chosen and other Angel projects have raised similar concerns about extra-biblical content, theological associations, and the risk that audiences treat dramatized material as authoritative. The same caution applies here.

Recommendation

Based on the scriptural warnings in Galatians 1:6–9 and 2 John 7–11, those who hold to the biblical gospel and the biblical Jesus should not financially support this film. “Not a penny” reasonably applies the principle of not becoming a partaker in what one judges to be contrary to the doctrine of Christ. While some individuals may examine the finished film against Scripture for themselves (in spite of what we shared here or unaware of it), the institutional ties and doctrinal differences are already public and long-established.

Believers are called to contend for the faith once delivered (Jude 3), to test all things (1 Thessalonians 5:21), and to hold fast to the faithful word (Titus 1:9). The identity of Jesus Christ and the purity of the gospel are not secondary matters.
